OUR INN & SPA
Sunrise Springs Inn and Spa is literally a high desert haven, with seventy lush acres of spring-fed ponds with gardens and wildlife. Meandering paths guide our guests to private hideaways found throughout the property, including patios next to fountains, benches under trees, and decks overlooking ponds. Our year-round freshwater wetland is part of a spring that supplies water to El Rancho de las Golondrinas and the Santa Fe River Canyon, and we’re also located next to the Leonora Curtin Wetland, a thirty-five acre nature preserve. The preserve features rarely seen New Mexico wildlife such as white-faced Ibises, colorful wading birds with long legs and long curved specialized bills which migrate from Mexico, and the Virginia Rail, a small, thin, marsh bird which is attracted to the preserve’s wet marshes filled with cattails and other reeds.
The history of our Inn can be traced back to the earliest Spanish settlements in the Rio Grande valley. By the early seventeenth century, Sunrise Springs had become a paraje (or resting place), on the original El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the road connecting Mexico City with Santa Fe. The lush solitude, which impressed the first Spanish settlers, still remains, and Sunrise Springs Inn and Spa continues to be a source of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Sunrise Springs is only twenty minutes from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Founded by Spanish missionaries as their northernmost colonial capital in 1609, Santa Fe is one of America’s oldest and most beautiful cities. Near the Plaza you will want to visit the famous Loretto Chapel with its miraculous staircase, the San Miguel Mission (the oldest church in the United States), and the Palace of the Governors, the oldest governmental building in the United States. Our staff will help you to prepare for the day’s exploration. Enjoy the best of both worlds – the goings-on and lively activity of downtown Santa Fe during the day, and the tranquility of Sunrise Springs into the evening.
Sunrise Springs is also located next to El Rancho de las Golondrinas (Ranch of the Swallows), the premier living history museum in the southwest United States. The museum offers a step back in time to the history, heritage, and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico, with colonial buildings dating from the early 1700s. Docents and museum staff walk through the ranch in period clothing to demonstrate how life was lived on the frontier in early New Mexico, and special festivals and weekend events offer visitors a rare view of the celebrations, music and dance of the Spanish, Mexican and Territorial periods of the Southwest.
The owner of Sunrise Springs, Megan Hill, has endeavored to create a tranquil, aesthetic, and inspirational experience for her guests. The magic of the spring waters creates a nurturing oasis, and this is reflected in Sunrise Springs’ strong commitment to eco-friendly practices that support the environment and our local economy. These are reflected in the greenhouse we use for our herb and vegetable gardens, our commitment to recycling and composting, and our participation in Santa Fe’s Farm to Restaurant Project. Also, we use garden fresh biodegradable spa products. We believe that our grounds are homage to the power of nature and art in harmonious balance.
Also, don’t miss our wonderful Koi fish – they are some of the most spectacular specimens you may ever see! Did you know that Koi can live to be over forty years old? You will have hours of enjoyment watching our colorful fish as they course throughout the smaller and larger ponds on our property….they are truly magnificent, and you may find that they are a natural way to lower your blood pressure!
